Mercedes “Queen City” of the Valley

Honors It’s Fallen Heroes

The Mercedes Veterans War Memorial was a project initiated and spearheaded by Commissioner David Garza. In May 2006, he and some of his friends began discussing the idea of a memorial to honor the veterans of Mercedes to be built here in their hometown.  A committee was formed, a plan of action was formulated and with all committee members giving their input, the project was underway.  Col. Frank S. Plummer (USA Ret.)  who heads the Veteran’s War Memorial being built in McAllen, joined the effort by offering advice and support in al aspects concerning the memorial, based on his extensive experience in that field.  Siegler, Winston, Greenwood & Associates of Weslaco and Milnet Architectural Services of McAllen came on board next and offered their services free of charge.  State Representative Armando Martinez was invited by Commissioner Garza became the project advisor in all governmental issues concerning the memorial, a position he gladly accepted.  All city entities, local groups, schools, businesses, churches, Mercedes citizens and private individuals were contacted and urged to contribute to the memorial.  Commander Robert Martinez from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2369 was selected to handle all the monies contributed to the memorial fund.  Contributions immediately stated coming in from all parts of the Mercedes community.  There were even competitions among the schools to see who could raise the most money for the memorial.  The overwhelming response and show of support from the citizens of Mercedes was enormous.  In less than three months more than $32,431.00 was pledged towards the Mercedes Veterans War Memorial.  Mr. Mike Tawani, owner of the Mercedes Plaza, was contacted by Commissioner Garza to see if he would like to make a contribution; his response was to offer a 25 x 25 ft. square site for the memorial.  After many obstacles, disagreements and problems facing Commissioner Garza and the committee about the location of the monument, the Board of Adjustments eventually granted the permit for construction at the Bealls Plaza.  The rest as they say is history.

The monument will be engraved with the names of seventy Mercedes veterans who gave their lives for their country during World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and Afghanistan.  Hidalgo County has three Medal of Honor Recipients.  Mercedes proudly honors Sgt. William George Harrell of WW II as one of those recipients. And his name is also included to honor him for his extraordinary valor and courage.

Appreciation, respect and the immeasurable honor that is felt for our Queen City’s Fallen Heroes demanded that the Mercedes Veterans War Memorial take its place in the heart of the city.  For all to see and remember.
